Eponymous fashion brand Deepika Govind works directly with indigenous weaver clusters and artisans to create natural weave blends and intricate hand embroideries for all the collections.
Holding a degree in Arts from Mount Carmel College Bangalore and Masters in Economics from Stella Maris College Madras while preparing for the Indian Administration Services exams.. Deepika Govind chose fashion design as a profession instead and attended a programme on sketching and presentations.
Per FDCI: “She believes in the provocative power of the underplayed. Restraint is her leitmotif. The structure and design of each is artfully cut on clean lines. The accent falls on cool elegance and perfect tailoring. The handcrafted ensembles testify her quest for precision and an eye for detail. Nothing is left to chance from the selection of silk linings to the manner in which a buttonhole is hand-bound.”
Deepika Govind's collections find a comfortable balance between Eastern craftsmanship and Western construction. She believes in being involved in the evolution of every piece from its origin on the loom to its final destination on the shelf. It's not just about handcrafting collections. The use of natural fibers such as linen, silk and cotton subsequently led Deepika Govind to create quality fabrics. Annually she launches new fabrics, unique textures and works with weaver clusters and craftsmen to achieve this. Her natural fibre blends lend to environmentally friendly fabrics with which she creates stunning sarees. Per LBB: "Her saris also feature patola weaves often combined with floral motifs and delicately embroidered borders. One of our personal favourites is a sari with an ikat pallu and an elegant Swarovski border."
For Deepika Govind, textile craft is about creating heritage textiles that are relevant to the modern Indian woman. Govind- who has always been passionate about handlooms- directly works with weaver clusters and artisans to create fabrics of high quality using natural weave blends. She takes inspiration from the fabrics, draping directly on the form and the designs just take shape. Subsequently the garments reflect an elegant sensuality, are feminine and have a modern Indian aesthetic.
Slow, sustainable fashion. Indian fashion designer Deepika Govind envisions respecting the planet by working directly with indigenous weaver clusters and artisans to create natural weave blends and intricate hand embroideries for her collections.
