History
Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth (BSKKV), formerly known as Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, is an agricultural university located in Dapoli, Maharashtra.
It was established on 18th May 1972 by the Government of Maharashtra with the primary aim of addressing the unique agricultural challenges of the Konkan region. The university was renamed in 2001 in honour of the third Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri. P. K. Sawant, and today stands as a key institution in the development of agriculture in the region.
The university’s foundation was laid with the goal of solving region-specific problems related to agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, and allied sectors. The Konkan region is distinguished by its diverse agro-climatic conditions, soil types, and topography, which present distinct challenges to farming.
At the time of its establishment, agriculture in the region was characterised by traditional, outdated farming methods, and there was a significant migration of young and skilled individuals in search of employment. The university aimed to reverse this trend by educating and empowering the local population through scientific agriculture and innovation.
In 1965, the College of Agriculture was founded, making it the oldest institution within the university. Over time, other specialised colleges were added to the university’s portfolio. The College of Forestry was established in 2005, followed by the College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology in 1999, and the College of Fisheries in 1981. The university’s agricultural engineering programme made it the first in Maharashtra to receive ISO 9000-2000 certification. These colleges offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in various agricultural disciplines, including agriculture, horticulture, forestry, fisheries, and agricultural engineering.
BSKKV is renowned for its research contributions. The university’s research focus is mainly on rice, horticulture, and fisheries. In particular, its research centre at Karjat has developed several patented rice varieties. The university operates 15 off-campus research stations across the Konkan region, which focus on crop production, pest management, soil conservation, and resource management. BSKKV’s research has led to the development of improved farming practices that help increase productivity and sustainability in agriculture.
Over the years, the university has received several accolades for its work. It won the Best Institute Award from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in 1997 for its contribution to agricultural research, education, and extension services. The university’s Krishi Vigyan Kendras (Agricultural Science Centres) at Shirgaon and Karjat play a crucial role in the extension of new technologies to local farmers. These centres provide training and demonstrations of modern farming practices to help increase the agricultural output of the region.
The university has contributed significantly to the development of the Konkan region by improving agricultural practices and providing education that equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle the challenges of modern farming. BSKKV’s outreach programmes ensure that innovations in agriculture reach the farming community, thus enhancing the standard of living of local farmers.
Today, BSKKV continues to grow as a hub of agricultural excellence, with its commitment to sustainable development and agricultural innovation at the forefront of its mission.
