History

Eaton Corporation plc is an American multinational power management company headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. The company was founded in 1911 by Joseph O. Eaton, who merged a number of manufacturing companies into the Eaton Manufacturing Company. From 1924 to 1958, the company changed its name to the Eaton Axle Company and then Eaton Yale & Towne and eventually the Eaton Corporation. In the early years, the primary product lines included vehicle parts and axles, followed by products like transmission devices, motors, and switches, which have been pillars of the company’s business ever since. In the 1950s, Eaton began expanding into electrical products, launching its Cutler-Hammer line of industrial automation equipment, power distribution, and power control. In the 1970s and 1980s, Eaton’s focus shifted to the Americas, acquiring business in Canada and the US, such as the Billings Electric Motor Company, Cutler-Hammer, and the Vickers Hydraulics Company. In 1989, Eaton made its initial public offering of common stock, and began expanding its focus on international markets. In the 1990s, Eaton acquired businesses in the UK, Europe, Asia, and South America, expanding its product offering to aerospace and automotive markets as well. In the 2000s and 2010s, Eaton continued its expansion into technology, acquiring Cooper Industries and announcing the largest merger in the industrial sector in 2012 between Eaton and Cooper Industries. The combined company is now known as Eaton Corporation. Today, Eaton is one of the largest power management companies in the world and operates in over 175 countries with 94,000 employees. The company’s product portfolio includes electrical and automotive components, as well as aerospace and other industrial goods and services.
