History

The origin of Enel dates back to 1962 when the Italian government created Ente Nazionale per l’Energia Elettrica (ENEL). This agency was put in charge of managing the entire electric power sector in the country and establishing electric power supply throughout the nation. In the 1990s, Enel underwent a major restructuring to become a more efficient and competitive company. This restructuring included the privatization of many parts of the power infrastructure, including power plants and infrastructure. This was done to liberalize the energy market and make it more competitive. The privatization led to the introduction of the Enel Group, which included the former Ente Nazionale per l’Energia Elettrica (ENEL), the commercial and industrial activities, and the domestic and international branches. The group is now responsible for the production, distribution, and sale of electricity. Enel has also diversified its energy business and expanded its activities outside of Italy. It now operates in 30 countries including the United States, Latin America, South America, Africa, and Europe. In recent years, there have been a number of mergers and acquisitions within the energy industry, particularly in the renewable energy sector. In 2016, Enel was the largest energy company in Europe following the merger with Acciona, a Spanish firm with a large portfolio of assets in renewable energy. Today, Enel is one of the world’s largest integrated electricity providers, serving 70 million customers in 30 countries. It is also a major player in the renewable energy market and has invested heavily in solar, wind, and geothermal energy. Additionally, Enel is committed to sustainability, innovation and has been recognized as one of the most sustainable companies in the world. Enel is a founding member of the World Bank’s Global Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Platform (GEER). It is also a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Energy Security and Sustainability.
