FIS was founded in 1968 as Systematics Inc., a data processing company for banks. In 1983, the company went public and changed its name to Systematics Financial Services Inc. Over the next decade, Systematics continued to expand its business and in 1992, it merged with Alltel Information Services to become Alltel Information Services Inc.

In 2003, Fidelity National Financial, a title insurance company, acquired Alltel Information Services and changed the company's name to Fidelity Information Services (FIS). The acquisition made FIS the world's largest provider of banking and payment technologies.

Since then, FIS has continued to grow through acquisitions and expansions into new markets. In 2006, the company acquired Aurum Technology, a provider of wealth management software. In 2009, FIS acquired Metavante Technologies, a provider of banking and payment technologies, in a $2.9 billion deal.

In 2015, FIS announced its intention to acquire SunGard, a provider of software and services for financial markets, in a $9.1 billion deal. The acquisition was completed in November 2015, making FIS one of the largest technology providers for the financial services industry.
