The roots of Freeport-McMoRan go back to 1912 when the McMoRan Oil & Gas Company was founded in Texas by James “Buck” McMoRan and partner Thomas H. McMoran. In 1989, Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. spun off its oil and gas operation and changed its name to Freeport-McMoRan Inc. In 2006, Freeport-McMoRan acquired Phelps Dodge, a major copper producer, for stock valued at $26.5 billion, forming one of the largest corporations in the metals and mining industry. The merger was completed in 2007 after which the company changed its name to Freeport-McMoRan. In the present day, Freeport-McMoRan continues to conduct operations worldwide. It is the largest publicly traded copper producer in the world, employing about 30,000 people, including 15,400 in North America and 14,600 in Indonesia.
