History

The Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM) has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1980. The institution was established by Dr. M. V. V. S. Murthi, a visionary philanthropist, former Member of Parliament, and an industrialist dedicated to the advancement of education in India. Initially, GITAM operated as an affiliated college under Andhra University and was known as GITAM College.

Early Years and Establishment

The inception of GITAM College was marked by a commitment to provide quality higher education in the fields of science, technology, and management. Dr. Murthi, along with a group of inspired intellectuals and industrialists, envisioned an institution that would cater to the educational needs of the region while adhering to high academic standards. The college began with a modest infrastructure and a limited number of programs but quickly gained a reputation for excellence in education.

Affiliation and Autonomy

For over two decades, GITAM College functioned as an affiliated institution of Andhra University. During this period, it expanded its academic offerings and improved its infrastructure to meet the growing demands of higher education. The institution's persistent efforts to enhance its academic quality and infrastructure eventually led to it being granted autonomous status in 2007. With this new status, GITAM gained the freedom to design its own curriculum, conduct examinations, and make academic decisions independently.

Becoming a Deemed University

The year 2007 marked a significant milestone in the history of GITAM when it was recognized as a deemed university by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. This recognition allowed GITAM to broaden its academic horizon and establish new schools and departments. The institution adopted the name Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM) to reflect its broader mission and vision.

Expansion and Growth

Following its recognition as a deemed university, GITAM embarked on an ambitious path of expansion. The Visakhapatnam campus, the oldest and the largest, spans over 80 acres and is situated near the picturesque Rushikonda Beach. This campus became home to various new institutions, including the GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMSR), which was established in 2015 as a private medical college and teaching hospital. GIMSR enrols 150 students annually for the MBBS program based on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and 52 postgraduate students in various medical specialties.

In 2009, GITAM expanded its presence to Hyderabad, Telangana, establishing a campus that now houses seven schools: GITAM School of Technology, GITAM School of Business, GITAM School of Pharmacy, GITAM School of Architecture, GITAM School of Science, GITAM School of Humanities & Social Sciences, and Kautilya School of Public Policy. This campus is known for its vibrant student activities and state-of-the-art facilities.

The Bengaluru campus, established in 2012, is strategically located near the city's IT hub. It includes smart classrooms, laboratories, auditoriums, seminar halls, playfields, and student hostels. The campus consists of four schools: GITAM School of Technology, GITAM School of Business, GITAM School of Science, and GITAM School of Humanities & Social Sciences.
