Geox was founded by Mario Moretti Polegato in 1995. His goal was to design breathable shoes that are comfortable and prevent feet from getting sweaty and smelly. Polegato first attempted to achieve this goal by punching tiny holes into rubber soles with a Swiss Army knife while on a business trip in the United States in 1991. He then developed a breathable and waterproof membrane, which was referred to as the 'respiration sole', that allowed air to flow without letting water in.
