Summary

Glean is a Work AI platform designed to improve enterprise productivity by helping employees find, create, and automate tasks using AI. Founded in 2019 by a team of former Google engineers, Glean is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, and serves a wide range of industries, including retail, financial services, higher education, healthcare, and government. The platform is built to understand and index all enterprise data, offering employees a unified and intuitive search experience across different tools and data sources.

Glean’s AI assistant provides personalised, context-aware responses by integrating both internal company data and external web data. It helps employees quickly access relevant information, draft content, and generate insights, significantly improving decision-making and workflow efficiency. It combines semantic and lexical search to deliver highly accurate and tailored results, while ensuring data privacy by respecting company permissions.

The platform’s core feature is its enterprise search engine, which connects to over 100 apps, ensuring real-time, permissions-aware searches. Additionally, Glean offers an Agent platform where AI agents are built to automate tasks and processes within the organisation. These agents can be created using natural language prompts and can autonomously act on data, providing further automation across teams.

Security and privacy are top priorities for Glean, as it complies with various regulations, including SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, HIPAA, and ISO 27001. The platform also includes features to protect sensitive data from accidental exposure and guards against misuse of AI.

With a growing customer base and a valuation of $4.6 billion after raising $260 million in its Series E funding round, Glean is positioning itself as a leader in AI-powered enterprise solutions, offering significant ROI and enhancing employee productivity globally.

History

Glean Technologies, Inc. is an American technology company founded in 2019 by Arvind Jain, T.R. Vishwanath, Tony Gentilcore, and Piyush Prahladka. Headquartered in Palo Alto, California, Glean focuses on developing AI-powered enterprise search and knowledge management solutions.

The company's origins trace back to a problem Arvind Jain encountered while scaling his previous company, Rubrik. In 2018, a survey of Rubrik’s fast-growing team revealed that employees struggled to find the information or people they needed to do their jobs. This challenge highlighted the need for a unified search solution across various platforms. Motivated by this insight, Jain, along with his co-founders, established Glean to address this gap in the enterprise software market.

In March 2019, shortly after its establishment, Glean raised $15 million in Series A funding co-led by Kleiner Perkins and Lightspeed, with participation from the Slack Fund. This initial investment enabled the company to develop its core product: an AI-powered enterprise search system connected to all of a company’s internal data via over 100 SaaS connectors.

By September 2021, Glean introduced its assistive search tool, designed to pull together information from disparate applications, streamlining access to critical data across various platforms. This innovation marked a significant step in enhancing workplace productivity by simplifying information retrieval.

In May 2022, Glean secured a $100 million Series C funding round led by Sequoia Capital, achieving a $1 billion valuation and attaining unicorn status. This capital infusion supported the company's expansion and further development of its AI capabilities.

The company's growth trajectory continued with a $200 million Series D funding round in February 2024, co-led by Kleiner Perkins and Lightspeed Venture Partners, valuing Glean at $2.2 billion. This funding facilitated the doubling of Glean's workforce to 700 employees and the introduction of advanced features, including conversational AI assistants and tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT to create personalised summaries from internal data.

In September 2024, Glean raised over $260 million in a Series E funding round, co-led by Altimeter Capital and DST Global, increasing its valuation to $4.6 billion. This round highlighted growing investor interest in AI-powered services. The company also introduced new "multi-step" prompts, allowing users to accomplish tasks using natural language without requiring coding skills.

By June 2025, Glean had raised a $150 million Series F funding round led by Wellington Management, bringing its valuation to $7.2 billion. The company continued to innovate, focusing on building AI agents and expanding its enterprise AI platform to enhance workplace productivity and knowledge management.

Today, Glean serves a diverse range of industries, including retail, financial services, higher education, healthcare, and government. The company remains committed to its mission of expanding human potential to do extraordinary work by providing AI-centric tools that transform businesses.
