Founded in 2001 by Norwegian shipping entrepreneur John Fredriksen, the firm has steadily grown through extensive mergers and acquisitions as well as strategic joint ventures. At the end of 2013, the company had a fleet of 77 vessels comprising panamax, capesize, post panamax, ultramax and handymax vessels, trading in waters around the globe.
