History

In 1976, HCL started its journey of innovation that still powers the company today. Innovation is not just a buzzword at HCL, it's a part of the company's heritage and DNA. In 1978, HCL developed the first indigenous micro-computer, which was done at the same time as Apple. Ten years later, in 1988, HCL created a fine-grained UNIX multi-processor, three years ahead of Sun and HP.

HCL Technologies was founded on November 12, 1991, in Noida, India, as a separate legal entity when the parent company ventured into the software services business. The company received the certificate of commencement of business in February 1992, and then the name was changed to HCL Consulting Ltd.

In 1996, HCL formed a joint venture, HCL Perot Systems NV, with Perot Systems Corporation to provide access to a high-value client base of Perot Systems. The company started creating wholly-owned subsidiaries to cater to specific geographic regions in 1999. The same year, HCL Technologies was spun off as the information technology and software services arm of the enterprise, after a strong focus on manufacturing for over two decades, with a listing.

In 2000, HCL set up a dedicated offshore development centre in Chennai for KLA-Tencor Corporation, which is a supplier of process control and yield management solutions for the semiconductor and related microelectronics industry. HCL now has a worldwide network of R&D facilities and co-innovation labs, global delivery capabilities, and over 208,000+ 'Ideapreneurs' across 52 countries, delivering holistic services across industry verticals to leading enterprises, including 250 of the Fortune 500 and 650 of the Global 2000.

In 2001, HCL entered into a strategic alliance with Nasdaq-listed Vitesse Semiconductor to develop software solutions for global networking markets. HCL Technologies Ltd announced a 100% acquisition of Gulf Computers Inc, USA in 2002. In 2003, BT Group UK's telecom service provider gave a contract worth $160 million for BPO service operations. Also, M.A. Partners brought a wealth of domain expertise and clients, including many of the top Global Investment Banking firms, to the JV. HCL's BPO delivery centre in Chennai was awarded BS7799 certification from the British Standards Institute [BSIs] in 2004.

In 2005, HCL Technologies made a strategic move by acquiring an Irish call centre, which helped the company establish its position as the largest BPO Centre operation in Ireland. The IT market was experiencing a surge in spending in the retail segment and was expected to grow to USD 35 billion worldwide.

Two years later, in 2007, HCL Technologies announced a USD 15 million contract with Alenia Aeronautica to provide engineering services to improve the C-27J Spartan production line. During the year, the company incorporated its wholly-owned subsidiary, HCL Jones Technologies (Bermuda) Limited, while winding up all capital stock of Axon Group Ltd.

In 2009, HCL Technologies expanded its presence globally by setting up branches in Dubai, UAE, Helsinki, Portugal, Finland, and Macau. The following year, the company established a branch office in the USA and amalgamated HCL Technoparks Ltd with the company.

In 2012, HCL Technologies signed an agreement with State Street Bank and Trust Company to provide business process outsourcing services. The following year, the company partnered with Cisco to open the South Africa Centre of Excellence in Johannesburg and signed a long-term IT services agreement with Nokia.

In 2015, HCL Technologies acquired US-based PowerObjects and won an Application Development and Maintenance contract from Deutsche Bank. The company's revenue stood at US$5.92 billion.

The following year, in 2016, HCL Technologies won a five-year Next-Generation Information Technology Outsourcing contract from Husqvarna AB and announced an agreement to acquire all of the business of Geometric Limited, except for the 58% stake that Geometric owns in the joint venture 3 DPLM Software Solutions Ltd. with Dassault Systemes.
