Summary
The Home Depot is an American home improvement retailer headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. It was founded in 1978 and has since grown into one of the largest home improvement retailers in the world, with operations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Home Depot offers a wide range of products and services for home improvement and DIY projects, including building materials, hardware, tools, appliances, and home decor. The company's stores are known for their large selection of products and knowledgeable staff, and customers can also shop online for convenience.
It operates many big-box format stores across the United States (including the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands); all 10 provinces of Canada; and all 32 Mexican states and Mexico City. MRO company Interline Brands (now The Home Depot Pro) is also owned by The Home Depot, with 70 distribution centers across the United States. It has been involved in several controversies, primarily involving the security and safety of its consumers.
It is the sixth largest United States–based employer globally. In 2021, the company had 490,600 employees and more than $151 billion in revenue. The company is headquartered in incorporated Cobb County, Georgia, with an Atlanta mailing address.
The Home Depot is publicly traded and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It is widely followed by investors and analysts and is known for its strong financial performance and consistent growth. The company is a member of various stock market indices, including the S&P 500 Index, and is considered one of the largest and most successful home improvement retailers in the world.
History
The Home Depot was founded in 1978 by Bernard Marcus, Arthur Blank, Ron Brill, Pat Farrah, and Ken Langone with the goal of creating home improvement superstores that surpassed competitors in size and offerings. The company's vision was rooted in values such as respect, excellent customer service, and community engagement. In 1979, The Home Depot opened its first two stores in Atlanta, Georgia, marking the beginning of its expansion. The company went public in 1981 and joined the New York Stock Exchange in 1984. Despite financial difficulties in the mid-1980s, The Home Depot restructured its debts and continued its expansion, becoming the largest home improvement store in the United States by 1989. In the 1990s, the company introduced new initiatives such as the EXPO installation program and published a comprehensive home improvement book. The Home Depot also made strategic acquisitions, including the Canadian hardware chain Aikenhead's Hardware. In 2000, former General Electric executive Robert Nardelli assumed the role of CEO and president.
In 1997, The Home Depot acquired Maintenance Warehouse, a leading direct-mail marketer of maintenance and repair supplies. This purchase allowed The Home Depot to reach customers who were not easily accessible through its existing channels. The acquisition of Atlanta-based Apex Supply followed in 1999, adding a wholesale distributor of plumbing, HVAC, and industrial pipe and fittings to The Home Depot's portfolio. Both Maintenance Warehouse and Apex Supply were later rebranded as "The Home Depot Supply" in 2004.
In 2001, The Home Depot acquired Your Other Warehouse, a large plumbing distributor that focused on special order fulfillment. This acquisition also supplied two divisions of The Home Depot and the EXPO Design Centers. The company expanded into the Mexican market in 2002 with the acquisition of Del Norte, a home improvement chain. However, the Home Depot Landscape Supply venture, launched in the same year, closed all its stores in late 2007 after a relatively short duration.
The Home Depot continued to diversify its offerings through online ventures. In 2005, it launched the online home-furnishings store 10 Crescent Lane and shortly after, the online lighting store Paces Trading Company. Additionally, the company acquired Home Decorators Collection in 2006, which became an additional brand under its Home Depot Direct division.
In 2006, The Home Depot made a significant acquisition by purchasing Hughes Supply, the largest home retailer in the United States at the time, for $3.2 billion. Hughes Supply was integrated into The Home Depot Supply to better serve business-to-business customers. However, just five months later, The Home Depot sold HD Supply (formerly The Home Depot Supply) to a consortium of private equity firms, including The Carlyle Group, Bain Capital, and Clayton, Dubilier and Rice.
In 2007, Robert Nardelli resigned as CEO of The Home Depot, and was succeeded by Frank Blake, who implemented a more conservative compensation package and repudiated many of his predecessor's strategies. The company faced challenges during the housing market downturn, resulting in layoffs and store closures, including the entire EXPO Design Center chain.
In 2014, Craig Menear took over as CEO, with Frank Blake remaining as chairman. Menear had been with The Home Depot since 1997 and had held various management positions within the company. During Menear's tenure, the company experienced a data breach in 2014, which led to changes in credit card processing practices and offering free credit monitoring to affected customers.
In subsequent years, The Home Depot made acquisitions to expand its operations. It acquired Interline Brands in 2015, integrating it fully into The Home Depot by 2016. The online presence of The Company Store was also acquired in 2017.
In 2022, Craig Menear stepped down as CEO and president, and Ted Decker assumed the role of CEO. In 2023, The Home Depot announced a significant investment of $1 billion to raise hourly employee wages.
