The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is a public research university in Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The university is one of the eight government-funded degree-granting tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. Founded in 1937 as a Government Trade School, it is the first institution to provide technical education in Hong Kong. In 1994, the Legislative Council of Hong Kong passed a bill which granted the former Hong Kong Polytechnic its university status.

 

Driven by its motto, “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind”, the University nurtures socially responsible professionals and leaders with a strong sense of national pride and a global perspective. The University’s commitment to excellence has received international acclaim, with PolyU ranking 57th in the QS World University Rankings 2025. Seven subjects were placed within the top 30 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025. PolyU also strives to foster a University community in which all members are united with a strong sense of belonging and pride, empowering the University to scale new heights.

History

Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has a history that dates back to 1937. Originally established as the Hong Kong Government Trade School, it focused on providing technical and vocational education to support Hong Kong’s burgeoning manufacturing and trading industries. Over the decades, the institution expanded its scope, reflecting the city’s rapid economic development and increasing demand for higher education and professional training.


In 1972, the institution was renamed the Hong Kong Polytechnic and emphasized applied sciences, engineering, and technical education. During this period, it expanded its academic offerings, built new facilities, and strengthened its reputation as a leading provider of technical and professional education in Hong Kong. The polytechnic played a crucial role in developing skilled workforce talent for the region’s industrial and commercial sectors.


The pivotal moment in its history came in 1994 when the Hong Kong Polytechnic was granted university status, officially named The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
