Born on September 6, 1987, in London, Shetty's life took a significant turn during his time in business school when he encountered Gauranga Das, a monk who spoke about selflessness and minimalism. This encounter sparked a deep interest in spirituality and led Shetty to follow Gauranga on his lecture circuit throughout the United Kingdom.
After completing his education, Jay Shetty spent four summers in India, where he interned at corporations and trained with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also known as the Hare Krishna movement. His spiritual journey culminated in him spending three years living a Vedic monk lifestyle at an ashram in Mumbai, India.
Shetty's professional career began at Accenture, where he worked on digital strategy and served as a social media coach for the company's executives. His work came to the attention of Arianna Huffington, who hired him to produce videos for The Huffington Post on various topics, particularly relationships.
