KDDI Corporation provides telecommunications services in Japan and internationally. It operates in two segments, Personal Services and Business Services. The Personal Services segment offers smartphone, mobile phone, and other mobile communication services, as well as fixed-line services under the au Hikari brand; MVNO services; and mobile services under the au brand. It also provides smartphone-centric payment, financial, and other services through au PAY gateway; au HOME, an IoT service that watches over pets using sensors and cameras; au Denki to conserve energy usage; AEON, an English conversation school. The Business Services segment offers data center services to corporate customers under the TELEHOUSE brand; and various solutions for internet exchanges, telecommunications carriers, and cloud providers. The company was incorporated in 1984 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.
History
KDDI is a Japanese telecoms services provider headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. It is the parent company of mobile carrier AU, a mobile phone and internet provider. KDDI was established in October 2000 by the merger of KDD and IDO Corporation, two mobile telephone service providers in Japan. The company acquired J-Phone in October 2001 and launched its own 3G mobile cellular network – 3G japan – in November 2002. KDDI launched LTE services in August 2010 and a separate English site for international customers in April 2011. In April 2012, it published the KDDI Group Vision 2032, a long-term vision for KDDI group’s business expansions over the next two decades and the company slogan "abienique." KDDI launched the iPhone 5 in September 2012 and the iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 inOctober 2014. In April 2015, KDDI announced the formation of the KDDI Corporation Group Strategy and Vision 2015–2020 which revealed plans to expand its business and develop new areas in industry. At the same time, it announced its Vision 2030 with the aim of becoming a total telecommunications company, a goal it expects to achieve by 2032. In March 2016, KDDI began offering mobile phone rental services. It has since launched mobile payments, cloud services, the Internet of Things and the Mobile Wallet, a service providing electronic cash cards and mobile coupons. KDDI was named one of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) World’s Most Sustainable Companies 2016 in October 2016. It is also a member of the Nikkei 225 Stock Index, a cutting-edge indicator of the Japanese economy.
