Summary

Kingston University London is a public research university located in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, in South West London, England. It dates back to the Kingston Technical Institute, founded in 1899, and received university status in 1992, before which the institution was known as Kingston Polytechnic.

History

Kingston University, located in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames in southwest London, has a rich history dating back to 1899 when it was established as the Kingston Technical Institute. Initially, it offered courses in subjects such as chemistry, electrical wiring, construction, nursing, dressmaking, and clay modeling. Over the years, the institution expanded its academic offerings and facilities, reflecting its commitment to providing practical and vocational education to meet the needs of the local community.

In 1930, the Kingston School of Art separated from the Technical College, moving to its own premises at Knights Park in 1939. This move marked a significant milestone in the university's development, emphasizing its dedication to the arts and creative disciplines. The School of Art became an integral part of the institution's identity, fostering a culture of innovation and artistic excellence that continues to this day.

The institution underwent several transformations in the latter half of the 20th century. In 1970, the College of Technology and the College of Art merged to form Kingston Polytechnic, offering a broader range of academic programs. This expansion continued with the integration of Gipsy Hill College in 1975, further diversifying the institution's educational portfolio. These developments laid the groundwork for Kingston Polytechnic to evolve into a comprehensive higher education institution.

In 1992, following the enactment of the Further and Higher Education Act, Kingston Polytechnic was granted university status, becoming Kingston University. This transition marked a new era, allowing the university to award its own degrees and expand its research capabilities. Since then, Kingston University has grown into a modern, forward-thinking institution, renowned for its commitment to teaching excellence, research innovation, and community engagement.

Today, Kingston University boasts four campuses—Penrhyn Road, Kingston Hill, Knights Park, and Roehampton Vale—each specializing in different academic disciplines. The university offers a wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various fields, including arts, business, engineering, and health sciences. With a diverse student body and a strong emphasis on employability and real-world experience, Kingston University continues to play a vital role in shaping the futures of its students and contributing to the broader societal landscape.

The campus also features the modern Town House building, opened in 2020, designed by RIBA Gold Medal-winning Grafton Architects. The six-storey building includes a three-floor library, dance studios, a studio theatre, cafes, balconies, and a rooftop garden. It has won prestigious awards such as the RIBA Stirling Prize and the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture.

The Kingston Hill campus focuses on nursing, education, business, and music. Formerly known as Gipsy Hill, it became the site of the Business School’s modern building in 2012. This site has undergone major refurbishment, including upgraded workshops and a new gallery. The Roehampton Vale campus, dedicated to engineering disciplines, offers specialist facilities such as wind tunnels, simulators, and a fleet of engineering vehicles including a Learjet 25. The Reg Bailey Theatre Complex, once a church, now serves drama and dance students with two theatres and rehearsal spaces.
