History

The Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA or LVK in Albanian) was a militant group that sought to gain independence for Kosovo from Yugoslavia and Serbia. The organization was formed in 1994 and its primary operations were carried out from 1996 to 1999, during the Kosovo War. The KLA initially began as a small group of ethnic Albanian insurgents partly influenced by Albanian Kosovo dissidents and Serbian guerrillas. It was initially made up of small groups of former Yugoslav army soldiers and local Kosovars who had formed clandestine cells primarily to protect ethnic Albanian civilians during the turbulent times of the war. The KLA received funding from, among other countries, Albania and Turkey, and were also widely suspected of receiving funds from the Albanian mafia. The KLA was then widely supported, both domestically and internationally, and by 1998, had also gained military support from several Western countries. In May 1998, hostilities had broken out between the Yugoslav security forces and the KLA in Kosovo. By the end of the Kosovo War, the KLA had effectively built a guerrilla force of some 40,000 and become a de facto government in Kosovo. The KLA remained active after the war, and in 2004 disarmed and disbanded as part of a political settlement in the region. In recent years, the KLA have been widely credited as one of the key forces that secured freedom and self-determination for the people of Kosovo.
