In addition, the company offers Flex for dielectric etch applications; Kiyo for conductor etch applications; Syndion for through-silicon via etch applications; and Versys metal products for metal etch processes. Further, it provides Coronus bevel clean products to enhance die yield; Da Vinci, DV-Prime, EOS, and SP series products to address various wafer cleaning applications; and Metryx mass metrology systems for high precision in-line mass measurement in semiconductor wafer manufacturing. The company sells its products and services to semiconductors industry in the United States, China, Europe, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, Taiwan, and internationally. Lam Research Corporation was incorporated in 1980 and is headquartered in Fremont, California.
History
Lam Research was founded in 1980 in Fremont, California by David K. Lam. After selling his first company, Lam decided to invest in a start-up making a plasma etching machine. Lam Research went public in 1984 and started expanding beyond Los Gatos, including to Asia in 1989, just before the financial crisis. Lam Research continued to grow from there, buying little-known companies through the 90s. The company was acquired by KLA-Tencor in 1997 for nearly $1 billion. As a result, the Lam name was dropped from the corporate identity and the units were amalgamated under KLA-Tencor. In 2003, KLA-Tencor sold its Lam-branded wafer processing equipment back to a Lam family-backed investor group, led by CEO Stephen G. Newberry. As part of this change, the entire Lam Research brand was revived. Since then, Lam Research has grown significantly, launching a series of new products, expanding its global presence, and launching a variety of strategic partnerships. The company has also made numerous acquisitions, including Novellus Systems in 2012, FasTool in 2016 and Axcelis Technologies in 2019. Today, Lam Research employs approximately 10,000 people worldwide and its products are used in the production of virtually all electronic products, whether they are cell phones, video games, or sophisticated medical devices. The company has annual sales of approximately $11 billion.
