Summary

Lawrence Edward Page, commonly known as Larry Page, is an American computer scientist and Internet entrepreneur. Born on March 26, 1973, he is best known as one of the co-founders of Google, the world's leading search engine, along with Sergey Brin.

Page serves as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google. His innovative thinking and leadership have been instrumental in shaping the direction of the company and its various endeavours.

Initially serving as Google's CEO after its incorporation in 1998, Page stepped aside in August 2001 to make way for Eric Schmidt. However, he returned to the position of CEO in April 2011, bringing his visionary ideas back to the forefront of the company's operations.

In July 2015, Page announced a significant restructuring of Google's corporate structure, creating Alphabet Inc. as the new parent company. As CEO of Alphabet, Page took on a broader role, overseeing Google's various subsidiaries and initiatives in addition to other ambitious projects that aim to revolutionize multiple industries.

Page's leadership and vision have been focused on pushing the boundaries of technology and driving innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence, healthcare, autonomous vehicles, and renewable energy. Under his guidance, Alphabet has pursued groundbreaking projects, including the development of self-driving cars through Waymo and the advancement of life sciences through Verily.

Beyond his achievements in the business world, Larry Page has garnered considerable wealth. As of October 2019, he is ranked as the 9th-richest person globally, with an estimated net worth of $55.8 billion.

Throughout his career, Larry Page has demonstrated a relentless pursuit of technological advancements and a commitment to shaping the future of the Internet and beyond. His contributions to the field of computer science and entrepreneurship have solidified his position as one of the most influential figures in the tech industry.

Biography

Lawrence E. Page was born on March 26, 1973, in the US state of Michigan. His mother was a successful programmer, and his father was a computer science lecturer at Michigan State University and a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence. His parents introduced him to the world of computers from a young age and gave him the first device of this type when Larry was six years old. From 1975-1979 Page attended the Okemos Montessori School. After graduating from high school in East Landing in 1991, he went to Michigan State University, where he graduated in technical studies in computer engineering.

While applying for a master’s degree at Stanford University, Larry Page met Sergey Brin – the man with whom he changed the face of the Internet forever. One of Page’s university projects was to analyze patterns of links between websites. He hired Brin to help at work. Because the essence of the project was to find connections between websites, IT professionals quickly discovered new, faster and more efficient methods of searching the global network and created a web browser called BackRub, which they tested on Larry Page’s home computers. Despite the desire to keep the project secret, the news quickly spread and soon the entire university knew about the application written by Page and Brin. In 1997, the BackRub browser was renamed Google. In 1998, when Page applied for the PhD, Google became the named company registered for Larry and Sergey. The data storage servers were moved from Larry’s home to a friend's garage in California, and the founders of the internet giant postponed their plans to become doctors.

Until 2001, Page was the sole head of the growing group, and Brin served as president. By constantly generating profits, Google grew and changed its location frequently. In 1999, the company eventually settled in Googleplex, a giant building complex in California’s Mountain View. In 2001, Larry Page resigned as CEO of Google in favour of the position of CEO of Products. He was replaced by Eric Schmidt, who left in 2011 (now he is the executive chairman of the board). Then, the head of the company once again, after a ten-year break, was Page and he is still today. In 2004, Google made Larry Page and Sergey Brin billionaires when they were just 27 years old.

In 2015, a restructuring occurred, and Alphabet Inc. was established as the parent company of Google. Larry Page became the CEO of Alphabet, while Sundar Pichai took over as the CEO of Google. This move allowed Page to focus on overseeing Alphabet's overarching strategy and explore new ventures beyond the realm of Google.

Page's vision extended beyond internet search and advertising. He championed moonshot projects within Alphabet, such as Waymo, the self-driving car division, and Verily, the life sciences research organization. These ventures aimed to push the boundaries of technology and address complex global challenges.

Throughout his career, Page remained committed to philanthropy. In 2015, he co-founded the charitable organization, the Carl Victor Page Memorial Foundation, which focuses on issues such as poverty alleviation, education, and renewable energy. Page also expressed interest in promoting sustainability and investing in renewable energy projects.

While Page maintained a lower public profile in recent years, his influence within Alphabet and the tech industry persisted. As of October 2019, he ranked as the 9th-richest person in the world, with a net worth of $55.8 billion, according to Forbes.

In 2007 Larry Page married Lucinda Lucinda Southworth, sister of model Carrie Lucinda Southworth. He is a fan of alternative energy sources and spares no funds for research into their development. In 2004 he was awarded the Marconi Prize. Page is also a member of the National Advisory Committee at a Technical College in Michigan and a curator of the board of the X PRIZE foundation. Together with Sergey Brin in 2007 he co-financed the Hollywood movie Broken Arrows.

Vision

Larry Page, the co-founder and former CEO of Google, has a visionary outlook on leadership and the role of technology in society. He believes that as a leader, his primary responsibility is to create an environment where everyone within the company has excellent opportunities and feels they are making a meaningful impact on society.

Page's vision extends beyond the success of Google and focuses on the broader goal of contributing to the betterment of society. He envisions Google as a leader, not a follower, in driving innovation and addressing significant global challenges.

One of Page's sources of inspiration is Elon Musk, the entrepreneur behind companies like Tesla and SpaceX. Page admires Musk's ambitious goals of solving transportation issues, combating climate change, and establishing humans as a multi-planetary species. He sees these objectives as compelling and strives for Google to adopt a similar mindset in tackling significant issues that can positively impact the world.

By setting ambitious goals and pursuing groundbreaking projects, Page aims to position Google at the forefront of innovation and leadership. He emphasizes the importance of leveraging technology to create positive change, whether it be through advancements in clean energy, healthcare, or other areas that can benefit society as a whole.

Larry Page's vision revolves around empowering his team to make a meaningful impact, encouraging Google to take the lead in addressing global challenges, and inspiring others in the tech industry to pursue audacious goals for the betterment of humanity.

Recognition and Awards
In 2009, Page received an honorary doctorate from the University of Michigan during a graduation commencement ceremony. In 2011, he was ranked 24th on the Forbes list of billionaires, and as the 11th richest person in the U.S. In 2015, Page's "Powerful People" profile on the Forbes site states that Google is "the most influential company of the digital era". As of July 2014, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index lists Page as the 17th richest man in the world, with an estimated net worth of $32.7 billion. At the completion of 2014, Fortune magazine named Page its "Businessperson of the Year", declaring him "the world's most daring CEO". In October 2015, Page was named number one on the Forbes "America's Most Popular Chief Executives" list, as voted by Google's employees. In August 2017, Page was awarded honorary citizenship of Agrigento, Italy.
