History

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) was conceived in 1938 in Bombay (now Mumbai) by two Danish engineers, Henning Holck-Larsen and Søren Kristian Toubro. Initially established to represent the interests of the Danish dairy equipment manufacturer FLSmidth in India, L&T swiftly evolved beyond its original purpose.

The outbreak of World War II in 1939 brought unexpected challenges and opportunities. With trade routes disrupted by the war, Larsen and Toubro found themselves undertaking repair and service jobs, diversifying their business beyond its initial scope. The company began fabricating ships and handling repair work, marking its foray into the maritime sector.

In 1940, the German invasion of Denmark severed ties with FLSmidth, compelling Larsen and Toubro to chart an independent course. The wartime demand for ship repairs and the internment of German engineers in India created a niche for L&T in the field of installation.

In 1946, Larsen and Toubro officially incorporated Engineering Construction & Contracts Ltd. (ECC) to focus on construction projects, a pivotal moment in the company's history. ECC's establishment laid the groundwork for L&T's enduring presence in the construction industry.

The post-war period witnessed rapid expansion and diversification for L&T. In 1947, the company ventured into representing manufacturers of equipment used in various industries, marking its entry into industrial engineering. The same year, L&T signed an agreement with Caterpillar Tractor Company to market earth-moving equipment, a significant milestone in its journey.

By 1948, L&T had acquired 55 acres of land in Powai, Mumbai, paving the way for its future as a major player in India's industrial landscape. In December 1950, L&T transitioned into a public company, further fueling its growth trajectory.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, L&T continued to diversify its portfolio, venturing into machinery manufacturing, welding alloys, and collaborations with strategic partners like John Deere and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The company's contributions to India's nuclear and space programs underscored its growing stature as a technology and engineering powerhouse.

The 1980s witnessed L&T's foray into international markets, with projects spanning the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia. The company's global footprint expanded further in subsequent decades, with operations in over 50 countries worldwide.

In 2023, S. N. Subrahmanyan assumed the role of Chairman and Managing Director, ushering in a new chapter in L&T's illustrious history. Today, Larsen & Toubro stands as a testament to the vision and ingenuity of its founders, embodying excellence in engineering, construction, and technology on a global scale.
