LÖSEV's services include a multidisciplinary hospital, education centres for children with leukaemia, a village for children with leukaemia, and vocational training courses for survivors and mothers of children with leukaemia. LÖSEV has received recognition for its work from the United Nations, the World Cancer Research Declaration, and the World of Children Health Award. Its mission is to improve the lives of children with leukaemia and cancer and provide them with a healthy and better future.

History

LÖSEV, The Foundation for Children with Leukemia, is a non-governmental organization (NGO) and a not-for-profit public benefit organization that was founded in 1998 in Turkey by Dr Üstün Ezer. Dr Ezer was a well-known paediatrician who devoted his life to helping children with leukaemia and their families. He established LÖSEV with the aim of providing support to families of children with leukaemia who were from low-income backgrounds and could not afford the costly treatments required to combat the disease.

In its early years, LÖSEV provided financial assistance to families to cover the costs of leukaemia treatment. As the organization grew, it expanded its services to include a multidisciplinary hospital, LÖSANTE, which provides complimentary treatment, intensive care, accommodation, and meals free of charge to patients and their accompanying mothers.

Over the years, LÖSEV has continued to expand its services to provide comprehensive support to children with leukaemia, cancer patients, and their families. The organization has opened education centres for children with leukaemia, established a vocational training program for cancer survivors and mothers of children with leukaemia, and built a Village for Children with Leukemia to provide accommodation and employment opportunities for families who have to migrate to reach treatment facilities.

LÖSEV has also become a global leader in the fight against cancer. It has signed the World Cancer Research Declaration, a global initiative that aims to coordinate cancer research among global partners and promote faster progress in defeating cancer. LÖSEV has also been granted vital equipment by the United Nations Women Guild three times and has been awarded Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

Today, LÖSEV is one of the most recognized and respected NGOs in Turkey, with a reputation for providing high-quality support to children with leukaemia and their families. Its impact has been felt by thousands of families across the country, and its work has inspired many others to join the fight against leukaemia and cancer.

Goals and Purpose

The foundation aims to ease the burden of families affected by leukaemia and cancer by providing comprehensive and complimentary treatment at LÖSANTE Hospital. One of LÖSEV's primary objectives is to ensure that all children diagnosed with leukaemia and cancer have access to high-quality treatment regardless of their financial background. To achieve this, LÖSEV provides intensive treatment, accommodation, and meals free of charge to patients and their accompanying mothers. Additionally, LÖSEV has established a Village for Children with Leukemia, providing accommodation and employment opportunities for families who have to migrate to reach treatment facilities.

LÖSEV also recognizes the importance of education for children undergoing intensive treatment, and therefore, established Education Centers for Children with Leukemia. In 2008, LÖSEV School opened its doors, providing education to over 200 students under the curriculum of the Ministry of National Education.

Furthermore, LÖSEV aims to provide social and permanent services in all its activities. The foundation has been carrying out Vocational Training Courses for leukaemia and cancer survivors as well as the mothers of children with leukaemia. Through this program, LÖSEV provides employment opportunities for compulsory migrant mothers and gateway and relaxation opportunities.

In addition to providing direct support to leukaemia and cancer patients and their families, LÖSEV is also involved in raising awareness of leukaemia and cancer and promoting faster progress to defeat cancer. The foundation is a signatory of The World Cancer Research Declaration (WCRD), which aims to coordinate research among global partners and build on worldwide investments in cancer research. LÖSEV has also pioneered The International Week for Children with Leukemia, which has been celebrated for the past 21 years on the last week of May.

Impact

The organization provides crucial support, including medical treatment, accommodations, meals, education, employment, and social services, to those in need. One of the most significant impacts of LÖSEV is its provision of complimentary treatment at LÖSANTE Hospital, which includes intensive treatment, accommodation, and meals, all free of charge for patients and their accompanying mothers. This support is essential for families from low-income backgrounds, as 87% of the families of children diagnosed with leukaemia who are registered with LÖSEV are from a low-income background, and 11% have no income at all.

LÖSANTE Hospital has expanded its services to not only include children with leukemia but also adult cancer patients, and it is a multidisciplinary hospital providing medical services in other disciplines from cardiology to psychiatry. Additionally, LÖSEV has constructed Europe's most modern and well-equipped oncology city, which serves all branches from oncology to eye diseases, from cardiology to radiation all units.

LÖSEV also provides Education Centers for Children with Leukemia to help children compensate for missing school terms due to intensive treatment. The organization opened LÖSEV School in 2008, where 200 students receive education under the curriculum of the Ministry of National Education.

Moreover, LÖSEV has established a Village for Children with Leukemia to ease the pressure on families who have to migrate to reach treatment facilities. The organization gives priority to providing social and permanent services in all its activities, and it has been carrying out Vocational Training Courses for leukaemia and cancer survivors as well as the mothers of children with leukemia. The aim of this project is to provide compulsory migrant mothers with employment opportunities through an eligibility certificate in craftsmanship as well as providing them with a gateway and relaxation opportunity.

LÖSEV has become an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations in the year 2007. The organization has been granted vital equipment three times by The United Nations Women Guild, which has been a generous supporter of LÖSEV and its activities. LÖSEV is also part of a global initiative and signatory of The World Cancer Research Declaration (WCRD), which aims to promote faster progress to defeat cancer by coordinating research among global partners and building on worldwide investments in cancer research.

In addition to providing essential support to those in need, LÖSEV has had a significant impact on raising awareness of the increasing cases of leukaemia and cancer and promoting cancer prevention. The organization pioneered another event, The International Week for Children with Leukemia, for the first time worldwide. This week has been celebrated for the past 21 years in the last week of May.
