Marjorie Gutierrez began her professional career in September 2000 when she joined Hedley's Humpers Ltd. in London, a company specialising in fine art shipping, logistics, and art handling services. Starting in the finance department, she developed experience in financial management, business administration, and operational coordination within an industry that required precision, accountability, and careful management of high-value assets belonging to galleries, auction houses, museums, and private collectors.
In 2004, Gutierrez relocated to the company's New York office, where she became Finance Manager and a member of the management team. Working in an international environment, she expanded her responsibilities beyond finance into broader business management, operational planning, and organisational leadership. She contributed to managing complex cross-border projects while supporting business operations serving clients within the international art market.
Returning to London in 2008, Gutierrez continued to hold senior finance and business management positions while maintaining close involvement with the New York operation. During this period, her responsibilities expanded to include business operations, human resources, recruitment, organisational development, and process improvement. She regularly worked between the London and New York offices, helping coordinate international operations and implementing systems designed to improve organisational efficiency and business performance.
From 2014 until her departure in April 2019, her management responsibilities were dedicated primarily to the company's New York operations. Over nearly nineteen years with Hedley's, she accumulated extensive experience in finance, operational management, organisational leadership, business transformation, and strategic planning while working in one of the world's most specialised logistics sectors. The experience of managing high-value international projects in environments where operational precision was essential became a defining influence on her later consulting methodology.
Following her departure from Hedley's in 2019, Gutierrez transitioned into independent consulting, establishing herself as a Business Strategist, Operations Consultant, and Systems Strategist. During this period, she also undertook consultancy assignments as Business Manager for Properties of the World Ltd. and later as an Investment Consultant with Alesco, further broadening her commercial and strategic experience across different industries.
In October 2019, she founded Smart Business Designs, a business strategy consultancy headquartered in London. Initially working closely with creative entrepreneurs, artists, designers, and founders of creative businesses, the consultancy has since expanded its focus to support CEOs, founders, entrepreneurs, and business owners across a broader range of industries. The firm's work centres on helping organisations strengthen their commercial foundations through strategic planning, operational excellence, business systems, organisational development, and sustainable growth strategies.
