History
1961: Martin Marietta was formed by the merger of the Glenn L. Martin Company and the American Marietta Corporation.
1963: Martin Marietta starts building the floating nuclear power plant MH-1A as part of the Army Nuclear Power Program.
1969: The company was commissioned to build the Mark IV monorail used on the Walt Disney World Monorail System between 1971-1989.
1971: Martin Marietta loses landmark sex discrimination suit before the Supreme Court, in Phillips v. Martin Marietta Corp.
1975: Acquires Hoskyns Group (UK IT services company).
1982: Bendix Corporation's attempted takeover but ended in its own sale to Allied Corporation; Martin Marietta survives.
1986: Wins contract to convert Titan II ICBMs into space launch vehicles. The Martin Company built the original ICBMs.
1993: Martin Marietta is also a major contractor for the American space station scheduled to be built this year.
1994: However, Augustine's most dramatic move came when Martin Marietta and Lockheed announced a "merger of equals." It took the Federal Trade Commission several months to approve the union, which created the world's largest defence company.
1995: In the spring, the exchange of stock created an advanced technology conglomerate with interests in the defence, space, energy, and government sectors serving the commercial, civil, and international markets. It merged with another major aerospace firm, the Lockheed Corporation, to form the Lockheed Martin Corporation.
1996: The January, acquisition of Loral Corp.'s Defense Electronics and Systems Integration business made it clear that Lockheed Martin would not soon relinquish its number-one status.
