Matt Sorg

Matt Sorg is the Vice President of Technology at Solana Foundation, a role he has held since May 2024. With over 12 years of experience, he focuses on applying cutting-edge research to products with a mission-driven purpose. Sorg’s work spans several key areas, including machine learning, data storage, infrastructure, and scalable decentralised systems. His current role involves supporting the entire Solana ecosystem, which includes core protocol development, application support, and network operations.
 

Sorg has held leadership positions at various technology firms. At Solana Labs, he contributed to the growth of the ecosystem, specifically focusing on protocol engineering, network operators, decentralised apps (DApps), and infrastructure such as wallets and bridges. Prior to Solana, Sorg was with Unity Technologies, where he led machine learning and DevOps projects aimed at simplifying the development of autonomous agents. His work was influential in lowering barriers for non-experts to use machine learning for real-time 3D applications.
 

Sorg co-founded Concha Labs, where he was a product owner and patent co-author for a hearing diagnostic device. He coordinated machine learning research teams and developed scalable infrastructure. He also helped to improve access to hearing health solutions in collaboration with nonprofits.
 

Before his entrepreneurial ventures, Sorg worked as a Data Scientist at Riot Games, where he led teams focused on data products and machine learning applications for gaming, and at Fantasy Moguls, where he contributed to the development of machine learning models for social gaming.
 

Sorg also holds a Master's Degree in Econometrics from the University of Washington. He has been a mentor and advisor to startups through various organisations, including StartX and Creative Destruction Lab. He has patents related to hearing assistance technologies.

His career began as a Data Scientist at Riot Games, where he worked for four years from 2014 to 2018. At Riot Games, Sorg was part of a team that developed machine learning models for applications in gaming, such as computer vision classifiers, matchmaking systems, and time series prediction. His work contributed to the company’s strategic reports and data visualisation projects, which helped optimise player experiences and game performance.
 

In 2017, Sorg co-founded Korro Inc., where he led the development of the first video game NFT marketplace on Ethereum. This innovative platform integrated multiple payment methods, allowing users to trade video game assets globally. This work placed Sorg at the forefront of the blockchain and gaming sectors.
 

In 2018, Sorg co-founded Concha Labs, a company focused on creating hearing health solutions. He served as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and co-authored patents related to hearing diagnostics. His work aimed to make hearing solutions more accessible by reducing barriers to clear hearing for millions of people. The company built a scalable infrastructure, including web and mobile applications, to enhance hearing health outcomes.

In 2020, Sorg joined Unity Technologies as a Senior Leader in Machine Learning, where he led teams focused on automating gameplay testing and building autonomous agents for real-time 3D environments. His work contributed significantly to simplifying machine learning processes for non-experts, particularly in game development.
 

Sorg’s work with Solana began in 2021 when he joined Solana Labs as part of the product and technology leadership team. He played a pivotal role in accelerating the development of the Solana ecosystem, supporting protocol engineering, validator clients, and decentralised application development. He worked to expand the network’s infrastructure, including bridges, wallets, and on/off-ramps, thereby driving the growth of Solana's blockchain network.
 

Currently, Sorg serves as the Vice President of Technology at Solana Foundation. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing the entire ecosystem, from the core protocol to the applications built on Solana’s blockchain. He continues to lead efforts in building scalable decentralised systems, ensuring that Solana’s technology remains at the forefront of innovation in the cryptocurrency and blockchain sectors.
