History

McKesson is an American pharmaceutical distribution company that was founded in 1833 as Olcott & McKesson. In 1853, the company became known as McKesson & Robbins following the death of one of the partners, Olcott. The company was one of the first wholesale firms to manufacture drugs. In 1893, founder John McKesson died, and his heirs left the company to form the New York Quinine and Chemical Works.

By 1900, McKesson & Robbins had partially consolidated its industry by convincing several large wholesale drug distributors to become its subsidiaries. However, the company faced troubles in 1909 when the Musica team was arrested. The company faced similar charges in 1913.

In 1926, the company was sold to Frank D. Coster. In 1928, the company was incorporated as McKesson & Robbins, becoming a public company. The company earned $4.1 million in profits in 1929.

In 1938, Coster's true identity was revealed when a company treasurer's concern over the way the profits were being handled led to an investigation of McKesson & Robbins. Coster shot himself in 1939, and the company returned to normal business.

The company acquired Zee Medical in 1983 and Armor All Products in 1979 as it entered the car protection products industry. The early 1980s saw the company put in place practices that made it a leader in wholesale practices, and it made acquisitions to strengthen its role as a major distributor of healthcare products.

The company was renamed McKesson Corporation in 1984, and acquisition became a key component of its management strategy. In 1990, the company gained control of Medis Health and Pharmaceutical, Canada's major drug wholesaler.

In 1993, Merck & Co. bought rival drug distributor Medco Containment for $6.6 billion, and McKesson CEO Seelenfreund looked to the company's future in the annual report for 1993.

After the acquisition of PCS, McKesson continued to expand its services through various acquisitions and partnerships. In 1998, McKesson acquired HBO & Company, a provider of healthcare information systems, for $14.5 billion. The acquisition made McKesson the largest healthcare IT company in the world.

In the early 2000s, McKesson focused on expanding its distribution services by acquiring several pharmaceutical distributors, including D&K Healthcare and FoxMeyer Drug. However, the FoxMeyer Drug acquisition turned out to be a costly mistake for McKesson. The company was later forced to pay a $960 million settlement to the creditors of FoxMeyer Drug, which had filed for bankruptcy before the acquisition.

In 2006, McKesson made a strategic move to expand its presence in the technology sector by acquiring RelayHealth Corporation, a provider of electronic prescribing and health information exchange services. The acquisition helped McKesson to establish a strong foothold in the rapidly growing field of health IT.

In recent years, McKesson has continued to invest heavily in technology, particularly in areas such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, and robotics. The company has also focused on expanding its specialty pharmaceutical services, which provide medications for complex and chronic diseases such as cancer, HIV, and multiple sclerosis.

Today, McKesson is a global leader in healthcare services and technology, with operations in over 16 countries. The company employs over 80,000 people worldwide and generated revenue of $231 billion in fiscal year 2021. Despite its size, McKesson remains committed to its mission of improving patient care and satisfaction by providing comprehensive pharmacy solutions.
