Medicago was founded in 1999 by an investor group headed by Novartis and currently employs roughly 500 people. The company's technology platform is based on the use of a fast-growing plant called the Nicotiana Benthamiana plant to produce recombinant proteins for vaccines and other biopharmaceuticals.
