History
Micron Technology Inc. was founded in Boise, Idaho in 1978 by Ward Parkinson, Joe Parkinson, Dennis Wilson and Doug Pitman. Initially, the company specialized in semiconductor manufacturing, but has since moved into a number of markets, including computer memory and storage, digital imaging, consumer electronics, automotive and industrial manufacturing, and mobile communications. Early on, Micron developed the memory chip that revolutionized the personal computer industry: DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory). The company was the first to put a semiconductor-based DRAM chip on the market, launching Micron onto the world stage. With an innovation—the Fab 2 facility in Boise, Idaho—which drastically reduced distances and times between processes of fabricating semiconductors on a single chip, Micron revolutionized the industry and established itself as an industry leader. The company also entered into the technology market, providing joint venture designs and manufacturing services under the Micron Technology Solutions banner. In the early 2000s, the company acquired flash storage leaders Lexar, Infineon, and Numonyx, which further advanced its technology portfolio. Thanks to its innovations, Micron steadily grew over the ensuing decades and by 2018, revenues had increased to $20.4 billion. In 2019, the company was included in the Fortune 500 list for the first time. Micron is one of the world’s largest producers of DRAM and NAND Flash memory and is currently expanding into Non Volatile Memory express (NVMe) and 3D XPoint memory technology. As of 2020, the company is headquartered in Boise, Idaho and has locations in several countries across the world.
