Mumbai-based fashion designer Nandita Mahtani has been creating glamorous evening wear and edgy ready to wear that make a statement since since her debut twenty years ago. Her vision and commitment to her craft have led to some unique creations and collaborations with notable personalities like Virat Kholi, Karan Johar, Raveena Tandon and Cartoon Network and she recently celebrated two decades in Fashion with a high-octane star-studded showing: Reflect.
“Looking back, there have been several pivotal moments in my journey. From the exhilaration of my first fashion show to the thrill of participating in international fashion weeks, each experience has been a stepping stone, shaping my path in the dynamic world of fashion” she told Society Achievers. "Collaborating with individuals like Virat Kohli and venturing into diverse categories have added depth to my journey. The constant influx of new ideas and opportunities excites me, serving as the driving force that keeps me motivated and fuels my passion for creativity. What I’ve learnt is that when opportunities knock, you should make the most of it, and keep exploring newer avenues."
Armed with 20 years of experience in the fashion industry, Nandita Mahtani launched a new collection in early 2024: Reflect. In the showing Nandita showcased iconic pieces from the past two decades alongside her new designs. “We wanted it to be special and retrospective. That’s when we knew that we are going to ‘reflect’ into our journey of fashion and design, and what we are known for — the glamorous and chic line of resort cocktail wear" she told The Hindu. “We’ve used intricate handwork, beading techniques and conceptualised prints to make this collection unique yet reflective.”
In recent news Nandita Mahtani collaborated with Cartoon Network Enterprises to launch a capsule collection titled ‘Cartoon Network x Nandita Mahtani’. The collection comprised of slip dresses, skirts, bomber, zipper and denim jackets and sweatshirts. She told Fashion Network: “I have always been a huge fan of cartoons and the journey of celebrating fashion through this collection has been fun and inspiring. I have tried to add my interpretation to give Cartoon Network a chic and standout fashion ensemble with a sense of fun.”
"In my design process, I always envision creating pieces that I would personally wear. The core concept behind my designs is to ensure that the wearer feels confident and comfortable in their skin, while exuding a sense of femininity and allure simultaneously. This also appeals to my target audience of women who embody grace, stature, and femininity… Selling a product is not just about aesthetics; it’s about sharing a genuine belief in the beauty and empowerment that each piece can bring to the wearer."
Nandita Mahtani visualises a woman who is confident, glamorous and stylish. Someone with family values but at the same time a progressive worldly-wise woman who knows what she wants. The Mumbai-based fashion designer takes these thoughts with her to the drawing board and subsequently the collections have a fabulous mix of whimsical dresses astride evening wear that feel decidedly grown-up.
Nandita Mahtani retails chic, luxury ready to wear and glamorous evening wear that makes a statement. Her Resort 2014 collection is the perfect example. Here, summer dresses were flirty and above the knee. Sequinned wrap dress and one-shoulder sequinned dresses were hot-sellers while a halter dress with gold riveting and lace was perfect for date night. What's more, the one-shoulder full-length structured kaftans and the tube dress with self-beaded hand embroidery was seen on quite a few red carpets.
