Netaji Subhas University of Technology

Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT), located in Dwarka, Delhi, India, began as the Delhi Institute of Technology (DIT) in 1983. Established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, it was affiliated with the University of Delhi and initially offered undergraduate programmes in Electronics and Communication Engineering. Over the years, NSUT expanded its academic offerings to include Computer Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, and Manufacturing Processes and Automation Engineering.

The institute gained administrative autonomy in 1986 and was registered as a society in 1987. It introduced PhD programmes in 1989 and developed several postgraduate courses, with four gaining approval from the All India Council for Technical Education in 1994. Until 1998, the institute operated from its original campus at Kashmere Gate before moving to a new campus in Dwarka, inaugurated by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1997. The same year, it was renamed Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT) in honour of the freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose.

In 2018, through the Delhi Netaji Subhas University of Technology Act, the institute was upgraded to a full state university, changing its name to Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT). This change gave it autonomy as a non-affiliating university, enabling it to offer education and research across engineering, technology, sciences, humanities, social sciences, and management disciplines. Prof. Jai Prakash Saini was appointed as its founder Vice-Chancellor.

NSUT’s main residential campus spans around 149.5 acres in Dwarka, with additional campuses in Geeta Colony and Jaffarpur Kalan.

Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT), formerly known as Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT), is a state university located in Dwarka, Delhi, India. The institution's origins date back to 1983 when the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) established an engineering college named Delhi Institute of Technology (DIT). This college was initially affiliated with the Faculty of Technology, University of Delhi.

The institute commenced academic programmes at the undergraduate level in July 1983, starting with Electronics and Communication Engineering and an intake of 45 students. Over time, additional programmes were introduced in Computer Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, and Manufacturing Processes and Automation Engineering. Administrative autonomy was granted to the institute in 1986. Subsequently, the institute was registered as a society under the name “Delhi Institute of Technology” on 12 June 1987, under the Societies Registration Act No. XXI of 1860.

In 1989, the institute began offering PhD programmes and developed several postgraduate courses, four of which received approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in 1994. Throughout this period, DIT remained affiliated with the University of Delhi for all undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes.

Initially, from its establishment until 1998, the institute operated from its old campus at I.G. Block, Kashmere Gate, Delhi. The new campus at Dwarka, New Delhi, was formally inaugurated on 23 January 1997 by the then Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In the same year, through a Gazette notification dated 20 February 1997, the institute was renamed Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT) in honour of the Indian freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose.

The institution continued to function as an autonomous institute under the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi while remaining affiliated with the University of Delhi. Over the years, it expanded its academic activities, infrastructure, and scope of research, carving a recognised place for itself in technical education and research.

A significant change occurred with the enactment of the Delhi Netaji Subhas University of Technology Act, 2017 (Delhi Act 06 of 2018), passed by the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi on 10 August 2017. This Act provided for the reconstitution and upgradation of the institute from a non-affiliating autonomous institute affiliated with the University of Delhi to a full-fledged state university known as Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT). The Act empowered the university to offer education and conduct research across branches of engineering, technology, sciences, humanities, social sciences, and management. The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi appointed 26 September 2018 as the official date of establishment of NSUT as a university.

Prof. Jai Prakash Saini was appointed as the founder Vice-Chancellor of NSUT. Since its transition to university status, NSUT has continued to focus on advancing education, research, and development with a commitment to serving societal and national needs. The university maintains a fully residential main campus in Dwarka, Delhi, spread over approximately 149.5 acres, with additional East and West campuses located in Geeta Colony and Jaffarpur Kalan respectively.

Additionally, several specialised postgraduate diplomas and certificate programmes may be available to address emerging trends and specific skill sets, although the core focus remains on degree courses.

NSUT has an established PhD programme that began in 1989. The doctoral research covers diverse branches of engineering, technology, and related disciplines. Scholars pursuing PhDs at NSUT engage with faculty members and collaborate on projects with academic and industry partners.

In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, NSUT was ranked 57th among engineering institutions in India, with a score of 51.52. NSUT also featured in the NIRF 2024 University rankings, securing a position within the 101–150 band.

According to India Today's engineering college rankings for 2024, NSUT was ranked 8th among the top engineering colleges in India. Additionally, it was placed 5th in terms of placements, underscoring the university's strong industry connections and successful placement records. In the Outlook-ICARE 2022 rankings, NSUT was ranked 125th in the engineering category.

Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT) has published its placement statistics for the 2024 graduating batch, covering BTech, MTech, MBA, and other programmes. The highest salary package offered during the 2024 placement season reached INR 1 crore per annum, while the average package stood at INR 17.75 lakhs per annum. The recruitment drive saw participation from over 320 companies spanning various sectors, including more than 80 organisations recruiting from NSUT for the first time.
