History
NextEra Energy, Inc. is an American energy company based in Juno Beach, Florida. It is one of the largest clean energy companies in the world, with operations in 37 states in the U.S. and Canada. The company was founded in 1984 and has since grown to become one of the leading companies in the energy industry, specializing in renewable energy sources.
The company was originally called FPL Group, Inc. and was formed through the merger of Florida Power & Light (FPL) and Atlantic Energy in 1984. At the time, FPL was the largest electric utility in Florida, while Atlantic Energy was a small independent power producer. The merger gave FPL Group a more diverse portfolio of energy assets, including conventional fossil fuel generation plants and renewable energy projects.
Throughout the 1990s, FPL Group continued to grow through acquisitions, including Gulf Power Company in 2000 and Seabrook Station in 2002. In 2001, the company changed its name to FPL Group, Inc. to reflect its expanding portfolio beyond Florida.
In 2008, FPL Group changed its name to NextEra Energy, Inc. to better reflect its focus on clean energy and renewable sources of power. The company had already been investing heavily in wind and solar energy, and the new name signaled a shift away from fossil fuels and towards cleaner forms of energy.
Since then, NextEra Energy has become a leader in renewable energy development and operation. The company operates more than 19,000 MW of wind and solar capacity, making it the largest generator of wind and solar power in North America. It is also the world's largest utility company by market capitalization.
In recent years, NextEra Energy has continued to expand its renewable energy portfolio. In 2018, the company announced plans to invest $6.5 billion in new wind and solar projects in the U.S. and Canada. It also acquired Gulf Power Company from Southern Company for $5.1 billion, adding 460,000 customers to its customer base.
In 2019, NextEra Energy announced plans to build the largest solar energy facility in the world, a 1,500 MW project in Florida. The company also continued to expand its wind and solar portfolio, announcing plans for new projects in states including Iowa, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
In 2020, NextEra Energy continued to grow its renewable energy portfolio, announcing plans for a new solar project in California and acquiring a 50% stake in a solar project in Indiana. The company also announced plans to build a new wind energy facility in Nebraska, which will be the largest in the state once completed.
NextEra Energy's commitment to renewable energy has earned the company numerous awards and accolades. In 2020, it was named one of the World's Most Admired Companies by Fortune magazine for the 13th consecutive year. The company has also been recognized as one of the Best Employers for Diversity by Forbes magazine and one of the World's Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere.
Overall, NextEra Energy has come a long way since its founding as FPL Group in 1984. The company's focus on renewable energy has made it a leader in the industry, and it continues to invest in new projects and technologies to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.
