NTT's Integrated ICT Business includes mobile communications, smart life services, and a range of internet-related services, along with the development and maintenance of information communication systems and software.
The Regional Communications Business focuses on intra-prefectural communications services and related ancillary services. NTT's Global Solutions Business delivers a wide array of IT services, including cloud computing, data center solutions, and IT system development. They also provide network management, security, and consulting services, as well as various communication options such as teleconferencing and video conferencing.
In addition to their core telecommunications and IT services, NTT engages in various other activities, including real estate acquisition, development, and management, smart energy solutions, credit card transaction settlement, system design and development, and technology consulting.
Founded in 1952 and headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, NTT continues to be a leading force in the global telecommunications and technology sector.
History
Established in August 1952 as a state monopoly, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation (NTT) took over Japan's telecommunications system previously operated by AT&T during the Occupation of Japan. In 1985, NTT underwent privatization to foster competition in the country's telecom market. Notably, in 1987, NTT conducted the largest-ever stock offering at the time, raising US$36.8 billion.
Due to NTT's ownership of most of Japan's last-mile infrastructure, it wields significant control over landlines in the country, holding an oligopolistic position. In an effort to reduce NTT's dominance, the company underwent restructuring in 1999, splitting into a holding company and three separate telecom entities. The NTT Law governs NTT East and West, mandating their focus on short-distance communications and ensuring nationwide telephone service. They are also required to lease their unused optical fiber to other carriers at regulated rates. NTT Communications, however, operates outside the scope of NTT Law regulation.
In July 2010, NTT entered into an agreement to acquire South African IT company Dimension Data Holdings in a cash offer valued at £2.12 billion. By late 2010, NTT's transpacific network between Japan and the US reached a capacity of 400 Gbit/s, which was further expanded to 500 Gbit/s in August 2011.
