Its formation was a significant step forward in the academic scene of the North-Eastern states, setting the stage for growth in intellectual, academic, and cultural aspects in the hill areas.

Initially serving states like Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram, NEHU was designed as a local university nurturing the educational needs of the diverse communities in the North-East. This happened at a time when people were realising how crucial education was in uplifting the socio-economic conditions of the area. NEHU started its journey to become a centre of learning in the North-East with a focus on promoting people's intellect, academics, and culture.
