History

Northrop Grumman is an American aerospace and defense technology company founded in 1939 in California by John K. Northrop and his partner, Leon "Kappy" Kaminer. The company has since grown to become a leader in aerospace, defense, and security technologies. Northrop's early history is intertwined with the nation's efforts to build its air defense capability in the face of growing international tensions. Initially involved in the production of aircraft such as the P-61 Black Widow and B-2 Spirit, Northrop also contributed to the development of the first all-weather jet-powered fighter jet, the F-5 Tiger. In 1954, Northrop began involved in the development of the Navy's radar systems and advanced tactical missiles. By the 1960s, Northrop had become a major player in defense contracting, leading to the development of advanced aircraft including the B-2 stealth bomber in 1982. Other important accomplishments include the award-winning F/A-18 Hornet and the F-14 Tomcat, which was the world's first supersonic fighter aircraft. In the 1990s and 2000s, Northrop Grumman further diversified its product portfolio by forming joint ventures, amalgamating with subsidiaries, and acquiring additional companies. This led to its current position as a leader in defense, security, and information technology. Today, Northrop Grumman is one of the five largest defense contractors in the United States and provides services and capabilities to government and commercial customers in the areas of aerospace, cyber security, electronic systems, and homeland security.
