History

Osaka University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Japan. Its roots can be traced back to the Kaitokudo (a private school for the common people) and Tekijuku (a private school for the elite) that were founded in the 18th and 19th centuries, respectively. These schools were instrumental in the promotion of Western learning and scholarship in Japan, and they attracted many students who would later become prominent figures in Japanese society.

In 1869, following the Meiji Restoration, Japan began to modernize its education system, and the Kaitokudo and Tekijuku were integrated into the newly established Osaka Imperial University. This institution later became Osaka University in 1931, following the establishment of the Japanese Imperial University system. The new university was a merger of four existing institutions: the Osaka Prefectural Medical College, the Osaka Prefectural Engineering College, the Osaka Prefectural Normal School, and the Osaka Municipal Commercial College.

During World War II, the university suffered significant damage due to air raids, but it was rebuilt and expanded in the postwar period. In 2007, it merged with the Osaka University of Foreign Studies to become the largest national university in Japan.

Today, Osaka University is known for its excellence in education and research, particularly in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine. It has produced numerous prominent scholars, scientists, and public figures, including Nobel Laureate in Physics Hideki Yukawa, manga artist Osamu Tezuka, Lasker Award winner Hidesabur? Hanafusa, author Ry?tar? Shiba, and discoverer of regulatory T cells Shimon Sakaguchi.
