History

Palo Alto Networks was founded in 2005 by Nir Zuk, an Israeli-American engineer who had previously worked at Check Point and NetScreen Technologies. Zuk was the principal developer of the first stateful inspection firewall and the first intrusion prevention system, and he wanted to create a company that would develop next-generation security products for businesses and organizations.

In 2006, Lee Klarich joined Palo Alto Networks as the head of product management, where he oversaw the product strategy and roadmap and played a key role in delivering the company's Next-Generation Security Platform.

In 2011, Gartner began listing Palo Alto Networks as a leader on its enterprise firewall Magic Quadrant, which helped to establish the company as a major player in the cybersecurity industry.

In 2012, Palo Alto Networks debuted on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) with an initial public offering that raised $260 million, making it the fourth-largest tech IPO of the year. The company also welcomed Jean Compeau to its team.

Over the years, Palo Alto Networks continued to innovate and expand its product offerings.Since 2017, Palo Alto Networks has continued to be a leading cybersecurity company that provides advanced firewall solutions and other cybersecurity products and services to protect enterprise networks from cyber threats.

In August 2017, Lee Klarich became Chief Product Officer with responsibility for both engineering and product management for the company. The company also announced Logging Service, a cloud-based service that allows customers to amass their own data for machine learning and data analytics.

In 2018, the company started opening dedicated cybersecurity training facilities around the world as part of the Global Cyber Range Initiative. This initiative aims to provide hands-on training to cybersecurity professionals to improve their skills and knowledge in detecting and preventing cyber attacks.

In February 2019, the company launched Cortex, an AI-based continuous security platform that uses machine learning to detect and prevent cyber attacks. This platform integrates various security products and services to provide comprehensive protection against cyber threats.

Later in 2019, the company acquired Demisto, a security orchestration, automation, and response (SOAR) platform that helps security teams automate and streamline their incident response processes. This acquisition allowed the company to enhance its automation capabilities and improve its overall threat prevention and response capabilities.

In 2020, Dipak Golechha joined Palo Alto Networks as Chief Financial Officer. The company also acquired CloudGenix, a software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN) provider, to expand its cloud security capabilities. This acquisition allowed the company to provide comprehensive security for cloud-based applications and services.

In 2021, William (BJ) Jenkins joined Palo Alto Networks as President, succeeding Amit Singh who assumed the role of Chief Business Officer. The company was named a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Network Firewalls for the eighth consecutive year, reaffirming its position as a leading provider of firewall solutions.

Also in 2021, the company transferred its listing from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq. This move was aimed at improving the company's visibility and trading liquidity and aligning with its strategic growth plans.

In 2022, the company appointed Nandini Ramani as its new Chief Technology Officer. The company also announced the acquisition of Expanse, a provider of attack surface management solutions, to enhance its security offerings. This acquisition allowed the company to provide better visibility and protection for its customers' digital assets and infrastructures.
