History
The well-known Pernod Ricard brand was created in 1975 after the merger of Pernod and Ricard. Pernod was founded in France in 1805. It became a popular brand in the 19th century after it was distributed across Europe. Ricard was founded in France in 1932 and quickly became a popular alternative to Pernod. In the mid-1970s, despite competition, the two companies decided to join forces and create one powerful brand. Initially, the two companies worked independently of each other, but in 1976 they combined their operations and began a steady growth pattern. In the 1980s, Pernod Ricard emerged as a global company. In the 1990s, they grew and acquired several major spirits and wine brands, including Absolut Vodka and Chivas Regal. In 2000, Pernod Ricard made their first move into Asia, forming a joint venture with Beijing Red and creating Pernod Ricard China. In the following years, they went on to open operations in India, Latin America and Brazil, and also acquired a stake in Indian wine maker Sula Vineyards. In 2008, Pernod Ricard acquired the Swedish V&S Group, producer of Absolut Vodka, and became the second largest spirits company in the world, after Diageo. Today, Pernod Ricard has a portfolio of more than 100 brands, including Ballantine's, Kahlua, Chivas Regal, Jameson and Havana Club. The company is based in France and listed on the Paris Stock Exchange, and has a presence in nearly 80 countries. It is still a family owned business, with Alexandre Ricard at the helm.
