History

Plaud Inc. began its journey in late 2021, incorporated in Delaware and headquartered in San Francisco, California. Founded by Nathan Xu (also known as Xu Gao) and other entrepreneurs, the company set out to build an AI-native hardware and software platform capable of capturing, transcribing, summarising, and utilising spoken or visual information. In its earliest stage, the firm was also described as NiceBuild LLC (November 2021).

During its initial development phase, Plaud focused on designing and engineering its first consumer hardware product — the Plaud Note. This compact AI-powered device combined real-time transcription, summarisation, and voice recording capabilities. The Plaud Note launched in 2023, marking the company’s official market debut and demonstrating its global ambition by quickly gaining users across multiple regions.

In 2024, Plaud expanded its hardware portfolio with the Plaud NotePin, a wearable, clip-style device for hands-free note-taking. That same year, it established a Japanese subsidiary, Plaud Inc. Japan, with Japan soon becoming one of its strongest markets by April 2025. During this expansion phase, Plaud also raised funding from Carbide Ventures to support growth and product innovation.

Early 2025 brought a major milestone: the strategic acquisition of StarJar, a Y Combinator-backed medical AI provider. This acquisition accelerated Plaud’s enterprise offering — Plaud for Business — a platform designed for teams to record and analyse meetings, calls, and conversations across industries such as healthcare, sales, legal, and consulting. The move signalled Plaud’s evolution from a consumer hardware startup to a broader business productivity and AI solutions company.

By mid-2025, Plaud’s product ecosystem included the Plaud Note, NotePin, and Plaud for Business. Its platform supports transcription in 112 languages, offers industry-specific summarisation templates, and complies with major global security standards including GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, and EN 18031. The company reports a rapidly growing user base exceeding one million professionals worldwide.

Today, Plaud operates teams across San Francisco, Seattle, Tokyo, and Shenzhen, scaling its enterprise and developer ecosystems with APIs and SDKs to enable integration and innovation on its intelligence infrastructure. Its continued emphasis on data security, privacy, and compliance positions Plaud strongly in high-trust sectors such as healthcare, legal, and enterprise services.

From its founding in 2021 to consumer launches in 2023–24 and enterprise expansion in 2025, Plaud Inc. has evolved into a global AI-driven technology firm delivering a full-stack ecosystem for capturing, analysing, and leveraging conversational intelligence.
