History
PNC Financial Services, also known as PNC Bank, is an American financial services corporation based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1845 by Stephen Foster Reed as the Pittsburgh National Bank. It rapidly grew as one of the most well-known and trusted banking establishments in the area. In 1903, the bank merged with the Fifth Avenue Bank, forming the Pittsburgh National Corporation. PNC continued to grow with the addition of more banks and entities over the years, eventually establishing a nationwide presence. In 1982, the company renamed itself PNC Financial Corporation and became the first bank in the US to be traded on the New York Stock Exchange. PNC restructured in 2001, spinning off its retail and other banking operations into a separate company called PNC Bank. This allowed the original company to focus on its investment banking, wealth management, and other financial services. In 2008, PNC acquired the troubled National City Bank, greatly expanding its presence in the Midwest. In 2018, PNC posted an all-time high of $3.4 billion in net income, nearly doubling the previous year’s financial results. As of 2021, PNC is one of the largest financial services companies in the US, with assets totaling more than $415 billion and a presence in 19 states.
