Courses

Portland Fashion Institute is a respected educational institution licensed by Oregon's Higher Education Coordinating Commission and accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training. Its programs are designed to meet high standards of quality, with input from industry leaders like Adidas, Columbia Sportswear, Nike, Shibui Knits, and VFC, who form its five-member advisory board. All instructors are active professionals in the apparel industry, ensuring students receive current and practical knowledge aligned with industry demands.

PFI offers three primary certificate programs tailored to different career paths in fashion. The Apparel Designer program equips students with skills to launch their own clothing lines or work for major apparel companies. The Apparel Technical Developer program focuses on computer-aided design, patternmaking, and technical skills, preparing students for roles such as technical designers, patternmakers, or product developers. The Apparel Entrepreneur program teaches business skills essential for building fashion brands, including business planning, buying, merchandising, and e-commerce strategies.

Beyond these certificates, PFI provides courses available for non-credit or continuing education, allowing a broader audience to enhance their skills. Popular courses include Apparel Construction and Patternmaking, which start with foundational techniques and progress toward advanced digital design. These courses are designed to accommodate learners at various skill levels, from beginners to more experienced students seeking to hone specific skills.

The institute is committed to accessibility and supporting diversity in fashion education. It offers an annual scholarship for high school juniors and seniors demonstrating promise in fashion design and has received grants to promote diversity and business development. Notably, PFI emphasizes affordability, aiming for a school without debt. Since its founding, over 7,000 individuals have studied at PFI, which in 2023 transitioned into a nonprofit organization, reaffirming its mission to serve the community and foster talent in the fashion industry.
