Summary

Prosus is a global consumer internet group headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is one of the largest technology investors in the world, with a portfolio of companies that operate across a range of industries, including e-commerce, online classifieds, food delivery, and online payments.

Prosus was created in 2019 as a spinoff of Naspers, a South African media and technology company. The spinoff was intended to unlock the value of Naspers' international assets, which had become increasingly valuable in recent years. Prosus was listed on the Euronext Amsterdam stock exchange in September 2019 and quickly became one of the largest companies on the exchange.

One of Prosus' biggest assets is its stake in Tencent, a Chinese technology company that operates a range of popular social media, gaming, and e-commerce platforms. Prosus owns a 29% stake in Tencent, which is worth over $200 billion. This stake has been a major driver of Prosus' growth and has allowed the company to invest in other promising technology companies around the world.

In addition to Tencent, Prosus has investments in a number of other high-profile technology companies, including Delivery Hero, a German food delivery company, and Mail.ru, a Russian internet company. Prosus also owns a majority stake in PayU, a global online payments company that operates in over 20 countries.

Prosus is focused on investing in companies that have strong growth potential and are well-positioned to benefit from the shift towards digitalization and e-commerce. The company has a long-term investment horizon and is willing to make large bets on companies that it believes will be successful in the long run. Prosus has a team of experienced investment professionals who are responsible for identifying and evaluating investment opportunities around the world.

The company has a market capitalization of over $200 billion and is one of the most valuable companies in the Netherlands. The company has a diverse and global workforce, with employees located in over 80 countries around the world. Prosus is committed to supporting the communities in which it operates and has established a number of initiatives to support education, entrepreneurship, and social development.

History

Prosus NV is a globally recognized consumer internet group and one of the most significant technology investors in Europe. The company is listed publicly on both the Amsterdam and Johannesburg stock exchanges and is primarily owned by Naspers Ltd., a technology firm based in South Africa. Founded in 2000 as a spin-off of Naspers Ltd., Prosus was initially focused on emerging markets and online classifieds. In 2006, the company entered into a joint venture with Tencent, a Chinese technology company, to provide internet services and digital content to consumers in China.

In 2011, Prosus was incorporated as a Netherlands-based company and listed on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. The company then shifted its focus towards investing, particularly in technology and internet companies in Europe, India, and other emerging markets. Prosus made a significant move towards becoming a global consumer internet and technology company by acquiring various companies across the world.

In 2014, Prosus acquired a majority stake in MakeMyTrip, an Indian online travel company, and entered the Indian market. Two years later, the company acquired an 83% stake in eMag, the largest Romanian e-commerce company, to extend its presence in Europe. Prosus continued its expansion in 2017 by purchasing a majority interest in iFood, a Brazilian online food delivery service, and entered the Latin American market. The following year, Prosus acquired a majority stake in Delivery Hero, a German-based online food delivery company, which established its presence in the food delivery market.

In 2019, Prosus extended its reach into the US market by acquiring a majority stake in Letgo, an online classifieds company. A year later, the company made a significant move towards deepening its presence in the Indian market by acquiring a majority stake in Swiggy, an Indian online food delivery service. Today, Prosus has a global presence in Europe, India, Latin America, the US, and other emerging markets, positioning itself as a major player in the technology and consumer internet sector.

The company's strategy of investments and acquisitions has helped it become one of Europe's largest technology investors, and it is continuously exploring opportunities to expand its presence and reach across the world. Prosus is committed to leveraging technology to create value for consumers and businesses, and its global presence and vast experience in the industry are a testament to its success in achieving this goal.
