In December 2010, Protea Biosciences was founded in California by Dr. John Baker and Dr. Joe Sciabica. The company relocated to West Virginia and was one of the first institutions to join the West Virginia High Tech Consortium. In 2013, the company received funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the National Science Foundation. In the same year, Protea licensed their Proteome Profiling Technology to Genentech, allowing the company to provide comprehensive proteome protein mapping services.
