History

The Qatar Economic Forum is a relatively new event that was launched in 2021. It was created as a joint initiative between Media City Qatar and Bloomberg Media Group, with the goal of providing a platform for global business leaders to exchange ideas and formulate actionable steps towards economic growth.

The first edition of the Qatar Economic Forum was held in March 2019 and was attended by more than 500 participants from around the world. The event featured a range of keynote speakers, including H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, Christine Lagarde, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, and Mo Ibrahim, the Founder of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.

The second edition of the Qatar Economic Forum was held in December 2019 and built on the success of the first event. The event was attended by more than 800 participants, including global business leaders, policymakers, and academics. The event featured a range of keynote speakers, including H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior of Qatar, and Ray Dalio, the Founder of Bridgewater Associates.

The third edition of the Qatar Economic Forum is set to take place in May 2023 and is expected to attract even more influential business leaders, academics, and heads of government. The event will focus on pressing global challenges and necessary innovations to move the global economy forward, including the need for a comprehensive and sustainable recovery, changing financial environments, the energy transition, and the long-term growth brought about by sport in societies and economies.

Goals and Purpose

The Qatar Economic Forum will explore the potential of The Gulf-India-Southeast Asia Economic Nexus in driving global growth in the next decade. It will also discuss the investment opportunities this regional power nexus presents to global businesses.

The forum will address the issue of managing inflation and ways to boost long-term productivity, economic growth, and worker salaries without triggering a deep and prolonged recession.

Investors can learn about the best emerging market strategies and where to look for growth in today's volatile global markets.

The future of globalization and global trade will be discussed in light of shifting geopolitical interests.

The forum will examine how south-to-south direct trade will evolve in a world defined by more assertive economic statecraft and a shift away from globalization.

Participants will discuss how to get the global green energy transition and sustainable business efforts back on track and avoid the worst climate change scenarios.

The Qatar Economic Forum will also explore how artificial intelligence, the blockchain, the metaverse, and other technologies will combine to revolutionize the ways we trade, work, and play.

The forum will discuss ways to maximize the business potential of global sports while protecting the spirit of the games.
