The company creates solutions that redefine traditional automotive economics and remove the pain points of conventional ownership. It also manufactures autonomous electric vehicles intended to offer a comfortable and eco-friendly driving experience. Robert J. Scaringe founded Rivian in Plymouth, Minnesota in 2009.

History

2009: Robert J. Scaringe founded Rivian in Plymouth, Minnesota.

2011: The company changed its name to Rivian.

2015: Rivian opened research facilities in Michigan and the Bay Area.

2017: In January, Rivian acquired the former Mitsubishi plant in Normal, IL, with the intention that the plant would become Rivian’s primary North American manufacturing location. Until this year, the company operated in stealth mode and didn’t become public until it purchased an old Mitsubishi factory in Normal, Illinois early this year.

2018: In November, Rivian revealed its first two products: an electric five-passenger pickup truck named the R1T™ and an electric seven-passenger SUV named the R1S™.

2019: Ford Motor Co. invested a half-billion dollars into Rivian and said the companies would work jointly to develop electric vehicles.

2020: Tesla filed a lawsuit against Rivian in July, alleging Rivian stole trade secrets and actively recruited former Tesla employees.

2021: New 2021 Bentley Bentayga vs Range Rover review | two luxurious SUVs tested.

2022: Despite facing losses in the first quarter of this year, Rivian is expected to be successful.

Rivian has all the components of a buzzy tech startup: a lofty mission statement “keep the world adventurous forever” this captures its world-saving mission to create a carbon-neutral transportation business and a big valuation of $18 billion USD.
