RLJ Lodging Trust was founded in 2011 by Robert L. Johnson, the founder of BET and Chairman of RLJ Companies. RLJ Companies was first established in 2000 and was a private investment and management firm. In 2008, RLJ Companies acquired FelCor Lodging Trust, a publicly traded lodging REIT. After the acquisition, RLJ Companies began to spin off parts of the REIT into smaller REITs. Finally, in 2011, RLJ Lodging Trust was established as a spin-off of the original RLJ Companies REIT.
