History

Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS) traces its roots back to the year 1986 when the Saveetha Medical and Educational Trust was established in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The primary objective of the trust was to provide medical relief to the community while simultaneously promoting education and research initiatives. In pursuit of this mission, the trust inaugurated the Saveetha Dental College and General Hospital in 1988, marking its entry into the realm of healthcare and education.

As the years progressed, the Saveetha Medical and Educational Trust expanded its educational endeavours by establishing additional colleges and institutions under its umbrella. In 1992, the Saveetha College of Nursing was founded, followed by the Saveetha College of Physiotherapy in 1993. These institutions aimed to meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals and contribute to the development of the healthcare sector in India.

In 2001, under the norms set by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for obtaining "Deemed to be University" status, the Saveetha Medical and Educational Trust sponsored the creation of a new trust named Saveetha Institute of Medical & Technical Sciences (SIMATS). This strategic move laid the foundation for the transformation of Saveetha into a full-fledged university dedicated to medical and technical education.

Subsequently, in 2005, SIMATS was officially declared a "Deemed to be University" under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, by the Government of India. This milestone marked a significant turning point in the institution's journey, signifying its evolution from a collection of colleges to a cohesive university entity with academic autonomy.

Over the years, SIMATS continued to expand its academic offerings and infrastructure, adding new colleges and programmes to its portfolio. Saveetha School of Engineering was established in 2006, followed by Saveetha Medical College & Hospital and Saveetha School of Management in 2008. Saveetha School of Law joined the university in 2009, further diversifying its educational offerings.

In subsequent years, SIMATS continued its trajectory of growth and development, introducing new colleges and programmes to cater to emerging fields and industry demands. Saveetha College of Occupational Therapy and Saveetha School of Physical Education were established in 2017, followed by Saveetha College of Allied Health Sciences in 2019. Additionally, Saveetha College of Pharmacy, Saveetha College of Architecture and Design, and Saveetha College of Liberal Arts and Sciences were inaugurated in 2019, further expanding the university's academic footprint.

Presently, SIMATS has a faculty strength of over 1,500 members, dedicated to nurturing the next generation of professionals and researchers. With 13 colleges under its purview, including Saveetha Medical College & Hospital, Saveetha Dental College, Saveetha School of Engineering, and many more, SIMATS offers a comprehensive range of academic programmes catering to various disciplines and career paths.
