History
Savitribai Phule Pune University, formerly known as the University of Poona, was established on 10th February 1949. It was set up under the Poona University Act passed by the Bombay Legislature in 1948. Dr. M.R. Jayakar was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of the university.
The Chief Minister and Education Minister of Bombay at that time, Shri B.G. Kher, was instrumental in securing a campus for the university. A 411-acre plot in the northwestern part of Pune was allocated on a lease of 999 years, with a nominal rent of ?1 per year. Certain taxes were also waived to support the university’s establishment.
Initially, the university's jurisdiction covered 12 districts in Western Maharashtra. However, with the establishment of Shivaji University in Kolhapur in 1964, its jurisdiction was reduced to five districts: Pune, Ahmednagar, Nasik, Dhule, and Jalgaon. Later, in August 1990, Dhule and Jalgaon were transferred to North Maharashtra University.
In its early years, the university had only 18 affiliated colleges with an enrollment of over 8,000 students. By the academic year 1994-95, the number of affiliated colleges had grown to 209, and the university had 41 postgraduate departments and 118 recognised research institutions. The student population had also increased significantly to 170,000 across undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
The university has always placed a strong emphasis on research. It has recognised 70 research institutions, including notable ones like the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), MACS, CWPRS, NIV, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, and Deccan College. These institutions have contributed to the university's reputation as a centre for high-quality research and education.
