The company is also involved in developing and operating energy infrastructure, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities, natural gas pipelines, and storage facilities.

History

Sempra Energy was founded in 1998 through the merger of Pacific Enterprises and Enova Corporation, the parent companies of two long-established investor-owned utilities in Southern California. The company quickly expanded its operations into the Latin American energy market with the acquisition of two utilities in Chile and Peru in 1999. However, Sempra Energy faced legal action in 2001 for allegedly manipulating natural gas supplies and electricity contracts during the California electricity crisis. In 2003, the company completed three state-of-the-art power plant projects in Arizona, California, and New Mexico.

In subsequent years, Sempra Energy made significant investments in energy infrastructure projects in the United States and Latin America, including the creation of the Sempra Energy Foundation in 2007 and the launch of the Energía Costa Azul liquefied natural gas (LNG) receipt terminal in Baja California in 2008. The company continued to expand its LNG operations with the successful performance testing and commercial operations of the Cameron LNG receipt terminal in Louisiana in 2009.

Sempra Energy reached a major milestone in 2014 when its stock price reached $100 for the first time. The company continued to pursue strategic acquisitions and partnerships, including the acquisition of InfraREIT by Oncor Electric Delivery Company in 2019 and a partnership with Aramco to supply LNG to Saudi Arabia. Sempra Energy also completed the sale of its business in Peru in 2020 and reached a final investment decision for the Energía Costa Azul liquefaction export project in Baja California.

Today, Sempra Energy remains a Fortune 500 energy services company based in San Diego, California, with a focus on delivering superior shareholder returns through deep industry expertise and rigorous risk management. The company provides gas and electrical services to millions of customers in California and operates energy infrastructure projects throughout the United States and Latin America.
