History
Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has a long and rich history that spans over 125 years. It was founded in Shanghai, China, in 1896, with the goal of cultivating talented professionals for the nation. The institution started as Nanyang Public School, which was founded by the imperial edict of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty. The school was initially focused on educating students in western learning, with an emphasis on science and engineering.
In 1904, the school was renamed to Nanyang College, and two years later, it became Imperial Polytechnic College. In 1911, the school was renamed again to Imperial College of Nanyang, and a year later, it was merged with other schools to form the Government Institute of Technology Shanghai China. In 1921, the institution became Chiao Tung University Shanghai Branch, and a year later, it was renamed to Chiao-Tung-Pu Nanyang University.
In 1927, the university was renamed to Chiao-Tung-Pu No.1 Chiao-Tung University, and in 1928, it became National Chiao Tung University, formerly known as Nanyang University. The university moved to Chongqing during the Sino-Japanese War in 1942 and returned to Shanghai in 1946. In 1949, the university was renamed to Chiao Tung University, and in 1957, it became Jiao Tong University Shanghai Branch.
In 1959, the university was renamed to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and it has been known by this name ever since. The university was merged with Shanghai Second Medical College in 2005, and it is now a comprehensive university with five campuses covering more than 300 hectares.
Over the years, SJTU has educated more than 400,000 talents for the country and the world. The university has produced many distinguished alumni, including Jiang Zemin, a former president of China, and Tsien Hsue-shen, China's "Father of Space Science."
