Squarespace started as a hobby project of CEO and founder Anthony Casalena in 2003. The first product was a content management system and website building platform that let users easily create and manage professional, customizable sites. In 2004, Squarespace began offering commercial hosting services, and the company’s first paying customer signed up in 2005. Since then, Squarespace has grown to become a leading provider of website building, hosting, and domain registration, with over 1.7 million active sites as of October 2014.
