History
1998: The company was founded in December 1998 and is headquartered in Perth, the United Kingdom.“ Joining Forces in 1998
1999: Britain's retail market would be deregulated, which would allow approximately 23 million customers to choose their energy supplier and end the monopolistic position held by the 12 RECs in England, Wales, and Scotland.
2000: Scottish and Southern Energy acquired the SWALEC energy supply business.
2003: SSE and Midlands' parents failed to agree on a price and the merger was called off.
2004: In July, the company acquired the Ferrybridge and Fiddlers Ferry Power Stations for £250 million. The company announces a deal with National Grid Transco PLC that, upon completion, will position it as the second-largest energy distribution company in the United Kingdom.
2005: The £3.16 billion purchase would include two gas distribution networks and was expected to be completed in April.
2009: In August, it agreed to purchase the Uskmouth power station from Welsh Power Group Limited.
2010: In January, Scottish and Southern Energy changed the core company branding from Scottish and Southern Energy to SSE. In April, the company purchased the natural gas exploration and production assets of Hess Corporation in three areas of the United Kingdom Continental Shelf – Everest/Lomond, Easington and Bacton.
2013: The SSE Hydro is an arena located in Glasgow, Scotland, on the site of the Scottish Event Campus (SEC). The arena officially opened on 30 September and has a capacity of 13,000.
2014: In October, SSE became the first company on the FTSE 100 to be awarded the Fair Tax Mark which is an independent accreditation process for identifying companies making an effort to be transparent about their tax affairs.
2015: The Odyssey Arena located within the Odyssey Complex in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is known as The SSE Arena, Belfast and has a sponsorship agreement for ten years, which began in June.
2016: In March, SSE announced it would be closing all branches of its Scottish Hydro Electric shops and the accompanying online store, citing that "changing shopping habits and more customer choice meant the shops have been loss-making for a number of years". SSE had 2,975MW of renewable capacity on 30 September, including its share of joint ventures, with 2,731MW of this in Great Britain.
2017: In November, it was announced that SSE was looking to separate from its retail subsidiary which would then merge with the power division of rival Innogy.
2019: In November, SSE moved its UK business into a new Swiss holding company, confirming that it had done so following the Labour Party's pledge to take it into state ownership.
2020: The company sold its GB electricity supply business to Ovo Energy, to focus on its core businesses of electricity networks and renewables.
2021: In August, SSE agreed to sell its 33.3 percent stake in SGN for £1.2 billion.
